Cam, I loved reading this post. I remember Gill's store very well. I loved the ice cream cones at the soda bar. And nothing was self-serve. You had to give a list and the clerk brought the item to the counter. It was quite an innovation when Merrills' store had self serve and you could pick your groceries out yourself!
We did the puzzle and I discovered a funny thing. Two pieces wouldn't go in - that's never happened to us before. I'll send a screen shot to your email address so you can see.
Thank you, Peggy. Never had that happen with the puzzle myself, although a couple of times I thought there were pieces missing and they were hidden under the almost-finished puzzle.
And you pointed out that that was exactly what happened to me: one piece was "hidden" on top of the puzzle very near where it really should have gone - that made the other two pieces fit in nicely! Thank you for your reply!
Was this across Beaver Meadow from the Norwich Inn? How did a small town like Norwich support two stores (Dan and Whits)? and if you are from Johnstown, do you remember the candy shop across from the Gloversville public library? Keep up the good work.
And there was a third store in the town, besides Raycrafts in Lewiston and the store in Union Village: there was an IGA on Carpenter Street right where Andrea’s Hair Salon is now. It was in a different building but it was in the same location. The IGA was started by Donny Ballam and maybe owned by him, too. The Ballams lived in the house where the Carpenter Street Restaurant is now.
Yes, right on the corner of Main Street. Funny thing is, there were two *more* stores down in Lewiston, and one in Union Village, though the store there was actually on the Thetford side of the line.
I'm afraid I don't remember the candy store, unless it was part of the cigar store. Ed & Clark's in Johnstown had tobacco, and pool tables in the back, but also sold candy.
The thing I remember about Gloversville's cigar store was the bunsen burner on the counter next to the register, so you could light right up.
