Vermonters lending support to the Free Staters of Kansas
Puzzle for January 3, 2026 Early Settlers of Kansas
As I learn more of Vermont’s Abolitionists, I found a connection between the founding of Lawrence, Kansas and Vermont in the New England Emigrant Aid Society They directly funded ardent abolitionists to move to Kansas, in order that its citizens vote to make it a Free State. This issue led to “bleeding Kansas” and many consider those battles to be the indicator that the slavery issue was not to be settled peacefully, some even deeming it the “first battle of the Civil War.” You may care to dig deeper in some of the articles below:
