White River Junction, circa 1909
Back when South Main Street was dirt, and traffic was of little matter.
132 South Main St., White River Junction, VT.
Circa 1909, looking west.
Zoom in to spot the Coolidge Hotel, early automobiles, shop signs, and street lifeāmen, women, and children all frozen in time.
Present day street view:
The Crown Theater closed in 1927, soon after the now-defunct Strand Theater was built on North Main St.
From telephone operator to actress:
A charming 1916 clipping from the St. Albans Weekly Messenger recounts the rise of local Alice Kellyāfrom switchboard to stage, to a New York contract. The name change puzzles me, though
A touch of local color:
In 1917, a scuffle over a hat at the Crown Theater made the Rutland Daily Herald. The audience panicked when someone yelled āfire,ā but all was quickly calmedāexcept for Mr. DePalo, who was back in court again that week.
100% Perfect:

I noticed this street scene picture at the bus station in WRJ. There are a lot of other interesting shots there if you have a few minutes.
